Chapter 19: Song of the Year
On Saturday night I wore a green dress borrowed from the engineer's wife, and my mother wore her good cardigan and a sequined cap she had bought that afternoon for nine dollars.
We came up the red carpet at the Rhinestone Radio Honors with two real tickets and a photographer on every side.
"Donna," I said, "you're glowing."
"It's the steroids," she said. "Smile."
A reporter from an entertainment channel stepped into our path, microphone first.
"Linnea Sorrell? Dax Blalock's wife? There's a lot of talk this week."
"There's a lot of talk about a lot of things."
"Is it true you've been, um, unwell?"
"I'm very well," I said, and I smiled at the lens.
"I wrote 'Stay Till Morning,'" I added. "You can check the spine of my notebook."
She stared at me with her mouth open, and my mother steered me past her by the elbow.
Inside, the arena glittered.
Eighteen thousand seats, four tiers of lights, and a stage as wide as a football field with a white piano on it.
Our seats were in the third row on the aisle.
Three seats from ours, Gil sat with a leather folder on his knee.
He looked at me once, and his jaw went hard.
Then he looked down at the program and kept his eyes there.
"He's afraid," Donna said, very softly.
"He's furious."
"Same thing, in a heavy man."
The awards ran long.
A boy band won something, and a woman in a gold dress sang a ballad, and a comedian made a joke about divorce lawyers.
