Chapter 4: The Open Door
Kiera texted me at ten that night.
I'm so sorry about everything. I didn't know he'd do it like that, I swear. Dax is in Atlanta until two a.m. The garage code is still your birthday. I'll leave the studio door open. Take your notebooks.
I read it standing in Tilda's kitchen with a spoon in my mouth.
"No," Tilda said. "Absolutely not."
"She's the only person in that house who's been kind to me."
"She's the person who sang your song in your dress."
"She said she didn't know."
"Jo." Tilda put her spoon down. "She knew every note of the third verse. Where did she learn it?"
I did not have an answer.
But I had an order from a court telling me to stay away, and I had a woman who had hugged me in a dressing room telling me to come.
"The restraining order starts when the hearing happens," I lied.
"It starts when it was served."
"Then I'll be quick."
Tilda looked at the ceiling.
"You're going to do this whether I drive you or not."
"Yes."
"Then I'm driving, and I'm bringing a flashlight and a bat."
"You don't own a bat."
"I own a very heavy microphone stand."
We drove across town with the headlights off for the last block.
The house looked the way it always had, white columns and a lawn that Dax paid a man to keep too short.
The garage door lifted when I punched in my birthday.
My legs shook the whole way to the back door.
The new lock sat shiny in the old door, and the bolt had been left open for me.
The kitchen smelled like lemon tea.
I had not been gone a full day, and it already felt like a stranger's house.
