Chapter 22: After the Applause
The thermos was warm against my palm.
I turned it over once.
It had a dent near the base from the time Adele dropped it on a hospital floor.
"I'm not the one who looks after you," I said.
I said it quietly, and the microphone on the stand still picked it up.
"There's an outpatient clinic at the hospital that opens at eight on Monday."
"A dietitian there has your file and a one-page card."
"Your pills are in the blue case by your bed, and your son has counted them."
"Take them."
"Rhea," Adele said.
It was nearly a plea.
I set the thermos on the nearest table, between a vase of orchids and somebody's untouched dessert.
Then I folded the check once and tucked it into my bag, next to Gavin's receipt and the blue notebook.
I did not look back at her.
The room had gone strangely warm.
Someone started to clap in the back, the old man in the corduroy jacket.
This time the sound didn't die.
It rolled down the aisle and crashed against the stage.
Three hundred people were on their feet, men in tuxedos and women with their hands over their hearts.
The board stood, and so did the lawyers.
The cellist put down her bow and clapped with it under her arm.
