Chapter 6: Terms

"What is the book?" I asked.

Dario sat back down on my step.

"A black ledger. It holds the family's accounts and who owes us what." He rubbed his beard. "A man could run the Santangelo money from it for a year."

"And you think I took that."

"I don't. Gabe doesn't. Three of the five men who sit with him at the Table do."

"Why?"

"Because you left the same night." He said it without heat. "A woman who has never held a key to that apartment walks out with a suitcase, and by morning the safe is empty."

"I have never held a key to that apartment."

"I know. That's the one fact on your side."

He looked tired.

His jacket was damp, and I realized he had been sitting on a cold step in the rain for some time before I came home.

"Gabe has a week before the Table meets," he said. "He wants the book back, and he wants you left alone."

"Where is he?"

"Tearing the penthouse apart. He doesn't know I'm here."

"He didn't come himself."

Dario didn't answer.

I looked down at the street, at the wet bicycles chained along the canal and the lit windows across the water.

For three years, I had waited for Gabe to decide what happened next.

I took out my phone and unblocked his number.
