Chapter 5: Everyone Knew
On Monday morning my badge turned the reader green.
The guard at the desk looked up and nodded at me.
I nodded back, and I rode the elevator to the fourth floor with my left hand wrapped in gauze.
The sales floor was already full.
At 8:58 the CEO walked in with the head of HR and a man from IT carrying a laptop.
She didn't go to her office or to a conference room.
She stopped in the middle of the open floor, where forty people could see her, and said, "Dean. Come out here, please."
Dean came out of his glass office with his coffee.
He wore a fresh suit and the same big smile.
"Morning! Is this about Friday? I think we should all agree it got blown out of proportion."
"The audit finished at seven this morning," she said.
The man from IT turned the laptop around.
"Same desk, same login, 11:42," he said. "The corridor camera has the man in the chair. We also have where his money went."
Nobody on the sales floor moved.
"Dean Clanton, you are on unpaid leave, effective now, pending a review," the CEO said. "Your badge and your phone, please."
His smile held for a moment.
"You're joking. I run this division."
"You ran it Friday."
"Ask Warner where the money went!" Dean's voice cracked, and he pointed at me across the floor. "Ask him why he's stalking my fiancee! Ask him about the ten grand he owes me!"
Somebody in the back coughed, a short wet cough that might have been a laugh.
HR held out a plastic tray.
