Chapter 11: The Archive

On Monday at seven, forty-one people stood in a line down the executive hall to be swabbed.

A doctor with a gray bag sat at a folding table outside Lionel's office, and a nurse labeled tubes.

Lionel watched from his open door with his hands behind his back.

His jacket hung on the coat stand beside the elevator, where he had hung it every morning for thirty years.

Nolan stood at the head of the line.

He had not said a word to me since he arrived.

I was last.

Vicki stood two places ahead of me in line, in her cardigan, with her stapler in her pocket.

She had talked her way onto forty at six thirty with a story about a payroll audit.

"Ready?" she said under her breath.

"Ready."

"Then watch my hands."

She walked up to the folding table.

The doctor looked up.

"Your name?" he said.

"Vicki Hatcher. Payroll. I'm not here for a swab."

"Then why are you in line?"

"Because I was told this was a mandatory procedure for all employees under a medical form, and I would like to see the form," Vicki said, loudly, "and the signature of the person who authorized collecting my DNA at seven o'clock on a Monday morning."

Heads turned all along the hall.

"Miss," the nurse began.

"I'm reporting this to the state labor board!" Vicki said, louder. "And to a lawyer! And to my mother, who is a lawyer's receptionist!"
