Chapter 15: The Bible

Nolan's POV

I left Avery asleep on the sofa bed at six and put a note under her phone.

It said: Back by nine. Don't answer anyone.

I had no car and no cards, so I took the first train north.

I walked the last mile to Maple Court in the cold.

I had paid for this building for four months and had never gone through its front door.

The woman at the desk looked up from her coffee.

"Visiting starts at ten," she said.

"I know. I'm the one who pays the bills."

She studied my face, and her mouth went thin.

"Room twelve," she said. "She's up. She's always up at six."

Theresa Collins sat in a chair by the window with a blanket over her knees and one hand held down by the other.

Her left hand shook a little, the way Avery had told me once it did.

She had her daughter's hazel eyes.

They looked me over from my wet shoes to my collar, and she was not surprised.

"You're the Tunstall boy," she said.

Her voice was soft and unhurried, with the small catch of a person who has to think about each breath.

"Yes, ma'am."

"You have your father's jaw. Sit down, you're making the room nervous."

I sat on the edge of the bed.

"You knew," I said.

"The first Sunday Avery came with a ring on a chain around her neck, I asked who gave it to her."

"What did she say?"

"Nothing. So I read the business pages." Theresa tilted her head. "There was a photograph of you at the anniversary gala. You were frowning at the camera."
