Chapter 9: The Toast

The Halsey ballroom had forty round tables, and Imogen had put me at the one beside the kitchen door.

I came in a navy maternity dress that Vicki had ironed on her ironing board for twenty minutes, and Vicki came with me in a borrowed green gown and a pair of heels she could not walk in.

"I'm your plus-one," she said at the door. "I'm also your lawyer, your bodyguard and your emotional support stapler."

"I love you."

"Eat the bread. It's free."

At the head table, Lionel sat in the center with the board on both sides of him.

Imogen was at his right, in pale silk, with her bob smooth and her smile soft.

Nolan sat on her other side.

He had seen me when I came in, and he had not looked away since.

The waiters set down the first course.

It was soup, a thin yellow bisque in white bowls.

Imogen glanced down the room at me, and I knew exactly what she was counting.

Lionel stood and tapped a fork on his glass.

"My friends. A year ago I asked my son to build this company's future. Tonight I'd like Imogen to say a few words about the people who make that future possible."

Imogen rose with her glass.

She waited until the room was quiet.

"Thank you, Lionel. I want to thank the board, my father, who is somewhere under his napkin," she said, and the room laughed.

A broad man at the second table waved.

"I also want to toast the unsung people in our building," she said. "The girl who answers phones. The ones who work so hard for two."
