Chapter 11: Two Days in a Safe
"You're not surprised," I said.
Mason stopped three feet from me, with the plaque between us on the wall.
"No."
"You knew my parents built this wing."
"Yes."
"For how long?"
He took a breath.
"Since three o'clock the night you first slept in my bed. Nine days."
My hands had started to shake, so I pressed them flat on my thighs.
"The call. The roof file."
"It wasn't the roof."
"You looked at me over your coffee and said it was the roof."
"I did."
"I said I heard my name, and you gave me a lie to drink with my coffee."
"Yes."
He didn't dress it up.
He stood in the dim hallway with his shoulders square and let me look at him.
I'd have felt better if he had argued.
"Show me," I said.
"It's in my safe. I'll get it."
"No. Tell me now. Here. Every word."
He told me.
The trust, and Mrs. Lund's name on the deed, and what was still in the account.
Nine million four hundred thousand dollars that I had never heard of.
He said it flatly and slowly.
I listened with my back against the wall, and I slid down it until I was sitting on the old linoleum, in the same hallway where I'd once waited to be picked up from school.
I thought about the coats.
I thought about the braces.
Every winter coat I'd worn had been bought with my father's money, and I had said thank you to Mrs. Lund for each one.
"I said thank you for the chicken," I said.
"Jo."
"I said sorry for the chicken. I was seven." My voice cracked on it. "And the whole time I was paying for the plate."
