Chapter 13: Interest

At five the next morning, Mason Greer was standing in my pastry kitchen with his jacket off.

I had told him not to come to my room.

He had come to my work instead, and he knew that was a loophole.

"You said not the suite," he said. "You didn't say not the kitchen."

"It's five a.m."

"I've been here since four. I didn't touch anything."

He hadn't.

My marble slab was clean and my butter was still in the cooler, and he was standing eight feet from it with a thick folder in his hand.

I had walked out of Mrs. Lund's office the day before with my father's letter and without her release.

She had kept my shoebox.

I hadn't slept again, and I was in no mood to be handled.

"What's that?"

"Open it."

The first page was on bank letterhead.

It said that one million eight hundred thousand dollars had been placed in an account called the Brightwater Home Operating Reserve.

It covered payroll, food and utilities for eighteen months.

The only name under Signer was mine.

"If I sue her, the trust freezes the Home's accounts," I said slowly.

"So I took the freeze away."

"You paid for it."

"I loaned the Home money. I have no signature on the account and I can't touch a dollar of it." He kept his voice level. "Nobody can close those doors on Friday now. Not her, not a judge."
