Chapter 19: The Audit
The Home's donor breakfast was held on Friday in the same ballroom as the gala.
The same projector screen came down over the same stage.
This time I sat at the head table, in the seat Mason had held for a year, with the board on either side of me.
Mason stood at the back with his hands in his pockets.
Two hundred donors ate eggs and watched Mrs. Lund walk to the microphone in her lilac blazer.
"Good morning, friends," she said. "Before I speak, the board has asked an outside accountant to present a short report."
The banker nodded.
A thin man in a gray suit stood up with a tablet.
"I'll be brief," he said. "I reviewed twenty years of the Pennock trust. It paid the Home three thousand one hundred dollars a month for the care of one child."
The room had gone very still.
"Over the same twenty years, it paid the trustee a salary supplement of eleven thousand a month."
He swiped.
"It paid for a fountain, a van, and three roofs on a wing that was already insured."
He swiped again.
"It also paid for a lake cottage, now deeded to the trustee's sister."
Someone at a back table said, "My God."
"The total of draws I cannot tie to any child is one million one hundred thousand dollars."
Mrs. Lund took one step back from the microphone.
Then she stepped forward again, smiling.
"The trust was mine to manage," she said. "Every dollar went to the Home, one way or another."
