Chapter 14: The Duel
The field below Ashfall Fort was a flat bowl of grey gravel, a hundred paces across.
On the eastern slope stood ten thousand soldiers of Aoba in white and green, spears glittering in the sunrise.
On the western slope stood four hundred demons in black, and Kanae.
Between them, two men walked out alone.
She stood at the rail of the Legion's earthwork with Ishkra gripping her elbow and her heart in her throat.
Raizen came out first.
He had armor on, but it didn't fit him the way it used to.
He walked with the stick, and when he reached the center of the field he threw it down and drew the Dawnblade with both hands.
It lit.
Not much.
A thin white thread ran along the edge, like a candle behind a curtain.
Vorhaan came out last, with his black sword in one hand and no shield at all.
The Brand on his chest was a faint grey smudge under the open collar of his shirt.
He stopped ten paces from the Hero and saluted him with the flat of the blade.
"Raizen Ootori," he said, and the field was so quiet that his voice reached the rail. "I will make it quick."
"You'll make nothing," Raizen said. His voice was shaky. "You monster. You took her."
"She was thrown away."
"She was ours!"
He charged.
Kanae would never forget how it looked.
The Hero crossed the gravel in a handful of bounding steps.
He brought the Dawnblade down in a screaming arc, and Vorhaan met it with his own blade.
Sparks.
There was a flash of white, and the whole Legion hissed through its teeth.
On the earthwork beside Kanae a soldier fell to his knees with a gasp.
"The sword," Ishkra whispered. "It burns us even from here."
