Chapter 21: Terms of Peace
The Demon Lord came down to Hollowgate in a carriage drawn by six black horses.
The King of Aoba knelt to her on the cold stones of the courtyard.
Nobody forced him.
He walked in through the gate on foot, in his plain grey cloak.
He went down on both knees in front of her wheels, and the whole Legion watched him do it.
"Majesty," said the Lord of the Emberwaste. Her voice was dry as old paper. "You look unwell."
"I am ashamed."
"I would hope so."
The treaty was signed in the great hall that afternoon.
Himari stood beside her father's chair as his witness, and half the Legion packed the walls.
Kanae sat on the dais at the Lord's left hand.
Nobody had asked her to.
The Lord had simply looked at the chair, and then at Kanae, and Kanae had sat.
Vorhaan stood behind her shoulder in his dress armor, silent as a mountain.
The Lord read the terms aloud in her thin clear voice.
Aoba would withdraw from Ashfall Fort by the next dawn.
Aoba would never again cross the Pass in arms.
Every summoning circle in the Kingdom would be burned and its ink poured into the river.
The Archpriest would be given into the keeping of the Ashen Legion, to answer for his work.
"There is one further clause," said the Lord. "A debt."
She took a folded sheet of Ishkra's ledger paper from her sleeve.
Kanae recognized the handwriting.
"Payable in full to the quartermaster of the Ashen Legion, for the account of the Lady Kanae," the Lord read. "With interest accruing from today, at the Kingdom's own rate, compounded daily."
Somebody at the back of the hall started to laugh.
It spread down the walls in a rolling crack of demon laughter.
