On the ninth night every head of every house came to my father's kitchen.
They came because of the old custom.
On the last night of the novena, no door in the neighborhood may be shut to the dead man's table.
The priest came, and the three grandmothers of the Table in black lace, and the old men with their hats in their hands.
They sat on kitchen chairs and folding chairs along the walls with plates on their knees.
Ronan and his two hands had cooked for sixty.
I sat in my father's chair by the stove with the cracked cushion, and I ate nothing.
My uncle sat at the long table in the dining room doorway, where everyone could see him.
Ignazio had put on his best black suit.
He stood up when the plates were cleared and tapped a glass with a spoon.
"My brother is nine days in the ground," he said. "I thank you all for sitting with his house."
The old men murmured.
"I want to say before you what he would want said," Ignazio went on.
