Exiled Mate, Future Luna novel · Chapter 24 of 24

Chapter 24: Cake

I woke up in Rhys's bed with a bite on my neck and the smell of burning sugar in the house.

He was already gone from the sheets.

Voices rose up the stairwell, Dani's loud and Blake's mumbling, and a clatter of pans.

I put on his grey shirt and went down.

The kitchen was a disaster.

Flour lay across the counter in a white drift, and every bowl in the house stood on the table, and Dani had icing in her hair.

"Don't look!" she shouted. "Go back up! It's not ready!"

"It smells like it's on fire."

"That's the caramel. The caramel is supposed to do that."

"It's not," Blake said, from the oven.

He had on an apron that said Huddleston Pack Barbecue, three sizes too small.

He looked like he hadn't slept since the Stone, and he was grinning.

"I told her," he said. "I told her it burns at that heat."

"You said it was fine!"

"I said it was brave."

Rhys stood at the stove with his sleeves rolled and a kettle in his hand.

He didn't turn around.

The back of his neck showed my teeth, healing to a silver line.

He rubbed it once with his free hand, and I felt it in my own skin.

"Sit down," he said.

"Rhys, what is all this?"

"Sit."

I sat at the end of the long table, the one where Blake had eaten his sandwiches and Dani had read me nursing flash cards for a week.
