Chapter 4: Office Hours

"I'll save you a seat at lunch," Dani said at the door, and walked backward all the way up the aisle, mouthing, Call me.

The hall emptied.

The professor shut the door behind the last student and turned the lock.

I stayed where I was, in the fourth row, with my bag clutched in both hands.

He stood at the lectern with his back half to me, looking at the broken chalk.

"I'd like to ask you three questions," he said. "You don't have to answer them."

"Okay."

"Who raised you?"

"The Kippax pack," I said. "In Pine Hollow."

His jaw tightened.

"Who put you out?"

I stared at him.

"I didn't say I was put out."

"You came here with one bag," he said, "two days after the pack's awakening night, and you flinch when anyone behind you moves."

I hadn't known I did that.

"The Alpha's son," I said. "In front of everyone. He said I was hollow."

Behind him, the pencil cup on the lectern rattled and tipped over.

He put one hand flat on the wood, and the rattling stopped.

"Third question," he said, quieter. "Do you feel it?"

I could have lied.

I thought about telling him the room was drafty and I was tired.

"Yes," I said.

"When?"

"The second you walked in. And last night, from the dorm window, all night."

"From the north."

"From here."

He nodded slowly.

"I'm Rhys Huddleston," he said. "I teach three sections at this university, and Bellmoor sits on Huddleston land. I'm the Alpha of the pack that holds it."
