Chapter 14: The Gate of the Princess Court
Lingxue had barely gone back to the head table when the old steward slipped in behind the pillar.
He bent as if to refill Ruyun's tea.
"The Grand Princess says now, miss," he whispered. "Two chairs have come to the moon gate, and the Marquis's guards are with them."
Ruyun stood up.
The sergeant was already moving, and the old men along the wall peeled off one by one.
Nobody at the banquet stopped them.
The Marquis was laughing at something the Prime Minister had said, with his back to the room.
They ran through the plum garden in the dusk.
The Princess Court stood behind its moon gate with the lamps lit.
Two sedan chairs waited in the yard outside the gate, with eight bearers and twenty of the Marquis's house guards.
A man in a physician's cap stood at the front with a paper in his sleeve.
He was holding a lacquered tray with a brush and an ink stone.
"Her Highness is unwell and not in her right mind," he said to the Grand Princess's maids, who stood in the gate with their arms spread. "The Marquis orders her moved to the family temple for rest."
"She is in her right mind," a maid said. "She called you a fool this morning."
"That is part of the illness."
Ruyun came through the garden gate and stopped in front of the maids.
"Put the chairs down," she said.
Twenty guards turned.
Their faces changed as they saw who it was, and the oldest one took a half step back.
"The false girl," he said.
"I am the Grand Princess's granddaughter, and I hold her Guard tally."
