Chapter 24: The Real Legend
Ruyun rode twelve days north with the commander's seal in her sleeve and an answer from the Emperor sewn into her coat.
She came to the gate of Ironwall at dawn, with the one-armed man and the sergeant behind her.
The frozen Black River was running with spring water now, and the wall glittered.
The sentry on the tower saw her first.
He stared, and then he turned and shouted something into the camp, and the horn sounded three times.
By the time she reached the gate, the whole garrison was on the parade ground.
Three thousand men stood in ranks with their helmets under their arms.
Shen Zhuo stood at the head of them in his plain iron armor.
He had lost weight on the road, and there was a new gray thread in his hair.
He did not move.
Ruyun got down from her horse and walked to him across the packed earth.
"You sent your seal back," she said.
"Yes."
"A commander cannot resign by sending a seal to the woman he wants to marry. It is not in the army law."
"I looked it up," said Shen. "It is not."
She took the Emperor's letter out of her coat and held it up.
"I have an answer."
He read it in front of the ranks.
His mouth twitched.
"What does it say?" a soldier called from the third row.
"It says," Shen said, very carefully, "that a man who can ride twelve days with a hundred men and a box can ride twelve days back. The resignation is refused. I am to have a wedding leave of three days, and I am to bring my wife to the capital in the spring." He lowered the paper. "The Emperor says he finds it a good arrangement for a soldier."
The parade ground was silent for the length of a breath.
Then three thousand men roared.
