Chapter 13: Why He Let Her

Rafferty held the microphone and looked at me across four hundred faces.

"She read my name at the county counter," he said. "I watched her read it, and I watched her sign anyway."

Tobias took one step toward him.

"So you lied to your own family," Tobias said.

"I lied to everyone," Rafferty said. "She lied to no one who didn't deserve it. Sit down, Tobias."

He put the microphone back in its stand and walked off the stage.

The room parted for him.

He reached me, took my hand, and kept walking toward the service door behind the bar.

I did not say a word until the door closed and we were alone in a concrete stairwell that smelled of floor cleaner.

Then I pulled my hand out of his.

"You knew."

"Yes."

"And you let me practise that face in the bathroom mirror for a week."

"It was a very bad face," he said.

"Don't you dare be charming."

"I'm not charming. I'm terrified."

"You told me to act surprised!"

"I told you to be surprised."

"That's the same thing!"

My voice bounced off the stairs and came back at me twice.

"I sat in a driveway and faked a gasp for you," I said.

"I thought I was protecting you from finding out I'd read your name."
