Chapter 16: Poppy's Shower

Maisie's POV

Poppy's price, Jerome told me over the phone, was that I come to her engagement shower at two.

"She wants you in the room," he said. "She says she'll talk where people can hear her. She doesn't trust a quiet place."

"I'm not paying her anything."

"I told her that."

"Then I'll go for free," I said.

He didn't say anything about the car or the name.

I didn't either.

The shower was in the garden room of the Neilston Hotel, under glass, with white roses on every table and thirty women holding mimosas.

A cake stood on a stand by the door.

It said Mrs. Werner in pink icing.

I walked in with the caretaker at my elbow, still in his work coat, holding his cap in both hands.

Poppy stood at the head table in a lemon-yellow dress with a sash that read Bride-to-Be.

She saw me and her smile held for about a second.

"Maisie!" she said, too brightly. "Everyone, this is the poor woman from the luncheon. Gregory's so worried about her."

"Hi, everyone," I said. "My name is Maisie Corrigan."

A woman in a pink suit set her glass down.

"On Monday night somebody dug up my father's grave," I said. "A man in a Werner Holdings jacket paid this gentleman five hundred dollars to leave the gate open."

I nodded at the caretaker.

"Who gave you the money?" I said.

He swallowed. "The man said it was from a Miss Sayer."

Thirty heads turned.

"That's not true," Poppy said.

I took out the dropped guard's phone, which I had kept charged, and plugged it into the television the hotel had set up for the shower slideshow.

The slideshow stopped.

On the screen, in letters a foot high, was the text thread with the contact called P.

Don't hurt her. Just get the key. Odile doesn't need to hear that I sent you.

"Poppy sent that," I said. "To the men who searched my father's house."

Nobody said a word.

Then a chair scraped, and the woman in the pink suit stood and picked up her purse.
