Chapter 21: The Note and the Key

Jerome's POV

"Maisie Corrigan," she said from the doorway. "What are you doing?"

I put the last shirt in the bag.

"Packing," I said.

"I can see that."

She was still in the champagne gown and her father's jacket.

There was a smear of gray makeup on her wrist where Gregory had grabbed her, and her hair had come down on one side.

"I wrote you a note," I said.

It was on the table, under the key to the room.

She didn't look at it.

"Say it to my face."

I zipped the bag halfway, and stopped.

I had practiced this on the drive, and none of it was any good now.

"Tonight a ballroom watched you take a company out of my family's hands," I said. "Tomorrow the board offers you the chair. It's going to be the first time anybody has asked you anything for a week."

"And?"

"And every choice you've made since Tuesday has been made with someone's hand on your back. Gregory's. Odile's. Mine."

"You didn't push me."

"I stood next to you." I made myself look at her. "Your father decided for you without asking. He traded my life for your peace, and he was kind about it, and he loved you. I understand that now. I'm not going to be a second man who does it."

She came a step into the room.

"You think you're doing me a favor."

"I think you should be able to say no to a Werner and have it cost you nothing."
