Chapter 10: The Rowhouse

Tuesday morning, Jo made pancakes in her scrubs.

Nobody had come to the house in the night.

I told her so.

"The lady at the corner store says Trevor stopped by yesterday," Jo said. "He bought flowers and a cake and asked which house was mine."

"Did she tell him?"

"She told him she's never met a Brennan in her life."

Jo slapped a pancake onto my plate.

"Eat," she said.

Cade came to the table and sat beside me, close, so his arm touched mine.

Jo looked at the arm.

Then she looked at his face.

"Oh, no," she said.

"What?" Cade asked.

"Nothing. It's just that you've been in love with her for four years and I knew it, and you're sitting there like a man who got a puppy."

Cade turned the color of the syrup.

"Jo."

"I've been quiet." She waved the spatula. "I've been quiet at three barbecues and a Fourth of July and a funeral. Four years! I kept my mouth shut because she was with that blond fraud, and a decent woman doesn't say it. But he's in my kitchen now, with my pancakes. So I'm saying it."

I laughed so hard that I had to put my fork down.

"Don't laugh," Jo said sternly, though her eyes were wet. "He was awful about it. He used to drive by your vet clinic and sit in the lot."

"I did not."

"Four times."

"Twice."

"Cade!" I said.

He covered his face with both hands.

"This family has no secrets," Jo said.

"I'm going to die," Cade said into his palms.
