Chapter 9: The Mirror

Teo's flashlight swept the beach, and the white lamp on the boat swung away and was gone.

It took four minutes.

Carmine stood at the bay window the whole time with his hand flat on the glass.

Then Teo came in from the sand, shaking water off his shoes, and dropped a cheap black camera on the table.

"They left it in the shallows," he said. "Long lens. Two hundred shots, mostly of the deck."

My face went hot all the way down.

"Mostly of what on the deck?" I said.

"Let's say," said Teo, "that if the Orsini want a wedding present for Vince, they've got a very detailed photo album."

He looked at Carmine's face and stopped joking.

"I'll smash it myself," he said gently.

"Nobody sees it. Go take a bath, boss. Both of you."

He left, closing the door.

I stood at the window with my arms wrapped around myself.

"They saw us," I said.

"They saw nothing that leaves this house."

"Carmine."

"I will end Ottavio Orsini for putting a lens on you."

He said it quietly, without heat.

That was what scared me.

I walked across the room and put my hands on his face.

"Look at me," I said.

He looked.

"I'm not ashamed," I told him. "I'm angry. That's all. Be angry with me, and not alone."

His eyes closed.

When he opened them, something in them had turned over.

"Come with me," he said.

The bathroom at the lake house was white tile and old brass.
