Chapter 17: Flint Hills
"Call everybody," I said.
So we did.
I called every butcher I'd ever bought a packer from.
Wick called every wood yard between Wichita and St. Louis.
Lorrie called a man she'd dated twice who drove a meat truck.
By midnight, we had eleven no's.
On Friday, the judge didn't eat his lean slice.
He set his fork down and pulled an old flip phone out of his shirt pocket.
"I judged a county fair in the Flint Hills in 1980," he said. "Grand champion steer. I gave it to a girl of fourteen over her daddy's banker's boy."
"Okay," I said.
"The girl's sixty now. Her husband's still alive. They run four hundred head of grass-fed on the old place outside Cottonwood Falls." He dialed with his thumb. "She sends me a Christmas card every year to say thank you."
He put the phone to his ear.
"Hello, sweetheart," he said. "It's your judge. I need a favor."
We left at five the next morning.
Lorrie stayed to open with the kid.
