I stood up.

I took the thin folder off the table.

"That's a copy," Hal said. "Keep it."

I walked back up the dock and up the long drive with it under my arm.

Wick got out of the truck when he saw my face.

"What did he..."

He saw the folder.

He stopped.

He knew.

"Get in the truck," I said. "I'm not doing this in his driveway."

It was four hours to Kansas City.

Neither of us said a word for any of them.

Lorrie was at the counter when we pulled into the yard at dusk, counting out the cash from a Sunday she'd run without us.

She came out the back door with a dish towel over her shoulder, all smiles.

"There they are! Second in brisket, first in sauce, and the whole internet's playing your speech..."

Then she saw us.

"Oh no," she said. "What happened?"

I threw the folder down on the picnic table.

Lorrie read it.

Her mouth fell open.

She looked at Wick, then at me, and very slowly sat down on the bench.

"Say something," I said to him.

Wick stood by Mabel with his hands at his sides.
