Behind me, Wick had stopped the truck in the middle of the street with Mabel on the hitch.
He leaned out the window and looked at Sherrie.
Then at the drive between her fingers.
"No cameras in my yard," he said.
"I didn't bring one." She held up her empty hands, the drive pinched in one of them. "I brought the opposite of a camera."
"You can talk at the counter," I said. "Like everybody else."
So she did.
The judge was already on his stool when we came in, because the parade had ended at Second Fire and nobody had gone home.
Sherrie looked at him.
"Is there anywhere in this building without an audience?"
"No," said the judge.
"The shower," said the kid.
"Out," said Wick, and the kid went to wash pans.
Sherrie sat on the second stool.
Lorrie leaned on the counter across from her, eating burnt ends off a sheet pan with her fingers.
Wick stayed in the kitchen doorway with his arms folded.
The dog lay across his boots.
"Talk," I said.
Sherrie put the drive on the counter between the napkin holder and the hot sauce.
