I held the phone over Wick's face until he opened his eyes.
He read it.
He didn't say anything for a while.
"He's going to sit at a table and eat my brisket," I said. "And give it a number."
"He won't know it's yours."
"He'll know."
"It's blind, Neva." He closed his eyes again. "That's the whole reason you walked down to the last row. Let him eat it."
October came in cold.
The wood yard Hal had scared off was still scared.
The ranch couple's bur oak was down to the last rank under the shed roof.
Lorrie posted a picture of our empty wood rack with one line.
WE NEED WOOD. ANY HARDWOOD. BRING IT IF YOU'VE GOT IT.
The first truck came on Monday morning before we'd opened.
It was the ranch woman's husband in his feed cap, with a stock trailer full of bur oak from the creek bottom.
"She says beat them," he said, and drove three hours home.
On Tuesday the Tulsa crew showed up with a cord of post oak on a flatbed.
On Wednesday the Arkansas pitmaster brought a bed of split cherry and wouldn't take a dime.
