Chapter 27: Second Fire
I dropped the box numbers and ran.
The tent was burning.
The canopy had gone up and was raining fire down on the wood rank stacked against Mabel's trailer.
Flames were coming out of her stack three feet high.
Her firebox door hung wide open.
Somebody had opened every damper she had.
I could smell lighter fluid over the smoke.
"WICK!"
The cab door banged open behind me.
I didn't wait.
The extinguisher was strapped to Mabel's trailer tongue, where I'd strapped it in April.
I ripped it loose and pulled the pin with my teeth.
I hit the wood first, low, at the base, the way the fire captain had taught the kid at the counter.
The powder went out in a white cloud.
The rank went black and hissing.
Lorrie was up, screaming, dragging the burning canopy away by one leg.
Then I went for Mabel.
You don't put water on a grease fire.
You don't open it up to look.
You starve it.
I pulled my sleeve down over my hand and kicked the firebox door shut with my boot.
I slammed the stack damper down.
