Chapter 19: The Broken Betrothal
I wasn't going to go.
I told Sahar so three times.
"You're going," she said. "You've put on your good dress."
I looked down. I had.
At dawn the oldest court lady had sent me a note in a shaky hand.
"A free perfumer may sit where she likes. Sit with me. Bring my scent if it's ready."
It was ready. I'd made it on the cellar steps that week.
Rose and saffron, like Ruya's. But a little orris under it, for a woman who'd outlived two queens.
I walked up to the palace with the bottle in my sleeve and my own face bare to the street.
The baker came to his door and didn't spit.
The Hall of Pillars was fuller than I'd ever seen it.
The Sultan had called the whole court, and nobody knew why.
The oldest court lady pulled me down beside her and took the bottle out of my sleeve.
She dabbed it on her wrist.
She closed her eyes.
"You wicked girl," she said. "That's my wedding."
"Is it right?"
"It's better. I wasn't wearing orris. I couldn't afford it."
On the dais, Ruya sat in gold silk beside her father's chair.
