Chapter 20: Dry City

By sunrise there was a line at every cistern in the lower city.

By midmorning the lines had turned into crowds.

Sahar and I carried our two water jars to the big cistern at the Copper Well.

The dye sellers' vats stood empty in a row, the color of dried blood and old sky.

A crier stood on the cistern steps with a brass horn and six guards around him.

"By order of the Grand Vizier, on behalf of the council!"

"The old channel under the lower city has collapsed! The engineers are working! Water in a month!"

"A month?" a woman shouted. "My baby can't wait a month!"

"One jar a day for each household!"

"And then what?"

"Then the city must remember who keeps its wells!"

The crier rolled up his scroll.

A man threw a jug at him.

It burst on the step, and the guards drew their swords, and the whole square surged.

Sahar grabbed my arm and pulled me back against the wall.

Somebody screamed.

Then a cart came round the corner.

Then another, and another.

Palace water carts, painted blue, each with a great clay tank sloshing on its bed.
