Chapter 13: The Iron Pier
The iron pier ran two hundred feet out into black water, and I walked it alone.
Eighty Lake Shore wolves stood on the shore behind me with lanterns.
Nolan had called them out to watch.
I knew it from the smell of them, packed in a half ring around the foot of the pier.
He wanted witnesses for whatever he had planned.
The ledger was under my arm, wrapped in my mother's coat.
Caleb was somewhere in the lake.
We had fought about it all afternoon in the lodge.
He wanted to walk beside me, and I told him a man at my side was the one thing the note forbade.
The water was the one door the note never mentioned.
He had looked at the lake, then at me, and then he had taken off his boots.
At the end of the pier Tilda knelt on the planks with her wrists tied.
Her braid was hacked off at the nape.
The red-bearded enforcer stood over her with a silver knife held flat against her stomach.
Five more wolves in a loose ring stood behind him.
"That's far enough, Lilia."
Nolan's voice came from the shore, pitched to carry over the water.
