Chapter 16: Silver

I ran the half mile to my parents' house faster than I had ever run.

Caleb stayed a step behind me, and the teacher's calls fell away down the road.

The kitchen light was on.

Ambrose lay on the linoleum beside the table with his flask in his hand and his lips gone the color of ash.

Black lines ran up the inside of his wrist.

I dropped to my knees and took his head in my lap.

"Grandfather."

His eyes rolled toward me.

"Silver," he said thickly. "In the flask."

"Don't talk."

"Get it out of me, you fool girl."

I took his wrist and sank my fangs into the vein.

The blood was bitter and wrong, and it burned my tongue.

The kitchen fell away.

It was dusk, and I was inside Ambrose looking at the counter where the flask sat open.

A hand came through the pantry door behind it.

A bandaged right hand, wrapped to the wrist, shaking as it tipped a brown vial into the flask.

In the dark window above the sink, a reflection.

A red beard.

I came back with silver in my mouth and spat it into the sink.

It hissed on the porcelain.

"It's the enforcer," I said.

"His hand's too burned to hold steady. He spilled some on the counter."

Caleb was already on one knee beside me.

"You have to clean it out of him."

"How?"

"Whatever you are," Caleb said, "use all of it."
