Chapter 4: The Waiting Room

On Monday morning I went back to work, because the dogs didn't know I had gotten married.

Jodie met me at the front desk of Pawprint Animal Clinic with both hands on her cheeks.

"Husband," she said. "Husband. You have a husband and I found out from a stranger's phone."

"I'm sorry. It was fast."

"It was a miracle. Is he hot?"

"Jodie."

"I watched the elevator video three times. He's hot."

"There's an elevator video?"

"There's everything," she said. "Your hair looked amazing."

I put my bag in the cubby and took the first chart off the pile.

A brown bulldog named Moose had swallowed a sock.

By nine-thirty the waiting room held two retrievers, a teenager with a hamster in a shoebox, an old woman with a very fat cat, and Preston.

He stood in the doorway holding a bunch of gas-station roses still in the plastic wrap.

"Willa," he said. "Can we talk?"

"I'm working."

"Five minutes. Please."

Every head in the room turned, including the hamster's.

I closed the chart.

"You can say it here," I said. "I don't have a private room."

He looked around at the retrievers and the cat lady and swallowed.

"Last night was a mistake," he said. "Lydia's mother is very sick, and she's been asking to see her married before. I panicked. I didn't know how to say no. I didn't mean it."

"You asked her at our table."

"I was under pressure."

"You said you'd been a coward for twenty years."

"I was acting."

"For six friends with their phones out."

His ears went red.
