The kitchen went so quiet I could hear the kettle ticking as it cooled.
"Say it again," I said.
"Clem..."
"Say the whole thing, in plain words, to all of us."
Pippa looked at the Archivist, then at Winnie's handbag, and last at Emeric.
She did not look at me.
"I'm not on trial in a kitchen," she said.
"You signed your trial in brown ink six years ago."
The red smile came on, bright and automatic, and then it went out.
"I owed the Court forty thousand dollars," she said.
"I lost it at their tables, the way you lose things when someone keeps pouring and calls you family."
"Thaddeus offered to tear up my markers for one piece of news."
"What news?" Winnie said.
"Whether the dying man he'd lost in the rain had crawled into the house where my sister lived."
She finally turned her face to me.
"I carried the dessert plates down behind you, Clem. I saw you hold your hand to his mouth."
