Chapter 17: The Roof

Pippa met me at the top of the service stairs at seven o'clock sharp.

She wore a black suit tonight, with no lipstick and no bracelet, and she carried a ring of keys.

"You came," she said.

"You said he asked."

"He didn't."

She said it flatly.

"Thaddeus gave you until half past eight," she said. "Then the Court arrives to keep the vigil."

"And you're my escort."

"I'm the one with the key."

We crossed a wide gravel roof under a sky the color of a bruise.

A water tower stood at the far end, with a cage bolted beside it.

It was iron, eight feet square, roofed with a shutter of black slats that was meant to swing open at the first light.

Emeric stood inside it in his shirtsleeves with his hands around two bars.

Pippa unlocked the door and didn't look at him.

"The guards are at the stair door," she said. "They can't hear you past the tower."

"Why are you telling me?"

"It's the only thing I have left to give you."

She walked away across the gravel and did not look back.

The door clanged shut.

I stood very still inside the cage with him.

Neither of us moved for as long as it takes a person to count to ten.
