I went in the front way.
The iron gate stood open on its one crooked bar, and the jasmine hung over the wall in the last of the light.
The black car at the end of the block was gone.
He was waiting in the kitchen, under the hanging lamp.
He had lit every lamp in the house, and for the first time it did not look like a place where one man hid.
He stood on the far side of the table in his shirtsleeves with his hair loose, and when I came in he did not move.
"You can lie to me now," I said.
"I know."
"So I can ask you again, and it won't mean what it meant."
"Ask."
I put my hand on the back of the chair where I had sat on the first morning.
"Do you want me here?"
He smiled, and it hurt to look at.
"More than I have ever wanted anything in a hundred and eighty-eight years," he said. "You are welcome to disbelieve me."
"I believe you."
"Why?"
"Because you're still standing on the other side of the table."
