Chapter 5: Fifty Thousand

The crew came off the buggies growling.

Twenty exiles smelled gardenia on their own ground, and every one of them knew whose it was.

"Easy," Fraser said.

Nobody eased.

"I'll go," I said.

"Not alone."

"She's here for me. If you walk in, she'll make it about you."

He looked at the Range Rover, then at me.

"Five minutes. Then I'm coming in."

"Ten."

"Seven, and I'm standing under the window."

"Fine."

I went up the steps.

Charmaine was sitting at Patsy's table in cream cashmere, with her handbag on her knees so it wouldn't touch anything.

Patsy stood at the stove with her back to her, stirring chili.

"Carys!" Charmaine stood up and held out both arms. "Look at you. You're filthy."

"I was at a fire."

"Of course you were." She sat back down and patted the chair beside her. "Sit. We need to talk like grown women."

I sat across from her instead.

Patsy's phone was lying on the counter by the bread box.

I picked it up, thumbed it to the voice recorder and set it face down on the table.

Patsy didn't even turn around.

"How's the boy?" I asked.

Something moved across Charmaine's face, quick.

"He's fine. He's confused. He thinks you hate him."

"I don't hate him."

"Well, you humiliated him in front of four hundred people." She smoothed her bob. "But I didn't come to fight."

She took an envelope out of her handbag and laid it on the table.

It was fat.

"Fifty thousand dollars," she said. "Cash. Gregor doesn't know."

"For what?"

"For being sensible."

Her voice went soft and sweet, the voice she used at pack fundraisers.

"There's a clinic in Spokane. Very discreet. You take care of the little problem, and you take this, and you go somewhere nice. Oregon. The coast. Somewhere that isn't Montana."
