Chapter 17: The Ridge at Moonrise

Willa's POV

I changed at the gate of the Ridge, and it cost me nothing.

That was the first thing that frightened me.

For six years I had waited for the wolf to come, and now it came the moment I asked.

I left the nightdress in a heap on the road.

Tiernan stood in the last of the dusk with his coat over his arm.

I looked at my wrist, and the bite had left a thin silver scar.

He did not say anything.

He did not need to.

He could feel me through the mark, the same way I felt him, and we ran.

The Ridge opened up under my paws, black pines and old snow and the smell of nine hundred wolves.

They knew me at once.

Porch lights went out along the road as I passed, one after another.

Nobody came out of the houses.

Nobody stopped me.

The old Hearth hall stood at the top of the hill where it had always stood, a long low building of grey stone.

A single window was lit.

I had not been inside it since I was five.

I stopped at the door.

I felt Tiernan arrive behind me, silent, and then I let the change go back through me.

I was a girl on the frozen ground with my arms around myself.

He put his coat over my shoulders.

"Ready?" he said.

"No."

"Good. Neither am I."

I pushed the door open.

Inside it was warm, and it smelled of tallow and old smoke.

Candles stood around the stone circle in the floor, dozens of them, burning straight.
