Chapter 15: Barefoot
Riko came down the mountain stairs to the kitchen at noon, with her coat over her arm and her hair in a crooked ponytail.
Kagiro walked behind her with his hand half out, not quite touching her back.
Daigo was standing at the range with a ladle.
He took one look at the pair of them and his clouded eye went huge.
"Your lord is wet," said Daigo carefully. "Your lord is smiling."
"Don't," said Riko.
"I have said nothing. My tail has said nothing. I am a steward of three hundred years."
"Your tail is out again."
It was, and it fluffed.
He stuffed it back in his robe and fled to the pantry.
Riko hung her coat on its peg and stood a moment on the black stone floor.
Then she kicked off her clogs, because the floor over the dragon coals was warm, and she had a mind to feel it.
"If I'm going to teach you to taste," she said, "we'll do it properly."
