Chapter 21: The Lender
The man with the folder did not raise his voice.
He didn't have to, because the whole dock had gone quiet, and sound carries over water.
"Your note matured Friday," he said to Dixon. "Principal and interest come to one hundred eighty-six thousand, four hundred dollars."
"The note is secured by your half of Tarrant Boatworks and the brokerage inventory."
"If it isn't paid by noon on Monday, my firm sells your half to whoever will buy it."
My mother stepped between them.
"This is a private matter, sir. We can discuss it in my office."
"Ma'am, I'm not discussing anything with you. You aren't on the note."
Dixon took off his sunglasses.
His eyes were bloodshot and wet, and he looked past the lender, up the dock, at the crowd.
I followed his look.
Brynn was standing at the top of the ramp by the marina office, in her cardigan, next to a woman her own height with the same blond hair.
They had come for the things in her desk.
Her sister held a cardboard box with a blue sweater folded in it.
