Chapter 22: Blessing of the Fleet
On Sunday at eleven the white church on Craven Street was full to the back wall.
It was the Blessing of the Fleet service, and every captain in the county sat in the front pews in their good jackets.
I came in with Myra and the fourteen from the yard, in my dress blues, and we filled the left side.
The same organ played, and the same light fell through the same windows, and I was sitting where I had walked down the aisle three weeks before.
Brynn sat in the second pew with her sister.
She held a manila folder flat on her lap, and her face was the color of paper.
My mother sat in the front pew with her back as straight as a plank.
She had a navy suit and her pearls, and a black binder open on her knee.
Dixon was not there.
The pastor welcomed the fleet and read from the Psalms about those who go down to the sea in ships.
He prayed for the shrimpers, the oystermen, the boatwrights and their families.
Then he smiled at the pews.
"Before we bless the boats, our annual report from the church treasurer, Mrs. Diane Tarrant."
