Chapter 8: Cade's Control

Cade's POV

My father kept me in his study for an hour after they locked Rose Harrow in the cells.

He sat behind his desk with a glass in his hand and said nothing for a long time.

I stood in front of it with my back on fire and my hands at my sides.

"The Harrow girl," he said at last. "You were three seats from her today. Did you smell it?"

"Smell what?"

"Don't be stupid, boy."

I kept my face blank. I had practiced it since I was ten.

"She's an omega, Father. She smells like an omega."

"No." He turned the glass slowly. "She smelled of something older. I have not smelled it in eighteen years."

I did not move. Under the desk, my hand closed so hard that my nails cut my palm.

"Go and get her," he said. "Bring her to the pack house tonight. The north bedroom. Lock it from the outside."

"On what charge?"

"On my word."

I thought about the seven stripes on my back, and I thought about Orla's hands washing the blood from them. She had been so careful not to hurt me, and she had been so furious.

"No," I said.

The glass stopped turning.

"Say that again."

"I won't do it." My voice came out level. "Her mother is in the cells for something she didn't do. You want me to lock up the daughter too, and I won't."

"You will do exactly what you are told."

"Then use the belt."

He stood up.

I had never said that to him before. I watched his face change, and I knew what was coming, and I stayed where I was.

He hit me once, across the mouth, with the back of his hand.

I tasted blood. It was almost a relief.

"Get out," he said. "When you come back, you'll know which of us gives the orders."
