Chapter 6: Her Explanation

I did not take the pen.

I moved the folder off my phone, woke the screen, and set the bill next to the petition.

"Before I sign anything," I said, "I'd like you to read this."

Lydia looked down at it.

An older woman who had come to collect her rocking chair stood three feet away with her checkbook open, and she had stopped writing.

Freja stayed by the door.

"What is this?" Lydia asked.

"Our phone bill. Your line, last month. Forty-one calls to Brooks's number."

I put my finger on the entries one at a time.

"Eleven of them at night. Not one call from him to you in three years."

For a moment Lydia did not move.

Then her eyes filled, quickly, as they always did.

"You went through my calls."

"I pay for them."

"Oh, Nolan." She pressed the back of her wrist against her mouth. "Of course I called him. That's what I've been trying to tell you."

"Tell me now."

"I call to beg him to stop. I leave messages. I say please, please, leave me alone, I'm getting married. I thought if I was kind he would stop." Her voice cracked. "He doesn't answer. He lets it go to voicemail and then he calls the next night from some other number, and those calls don't show on our bill, because I blocked them."

"You blocked the numbers he used to call you."

"The first week. I've blocked a hundred."

"And you called the one number you hadn't."

She nodded, and a tear fell on the petition.
