Chapter 7: Verna's Pie
A white Ford pickup came up the lane on Sunday morning with its horn going.
I knew the horn.
Verna had run the grading line at Tankersley Fruit for twenty-two years.
She announced herself at every door she ever knocked on.
I met her on the porch in a pair of Jesse's sweatpants with my braid half undone.
She climbed out with a sweet potato pie in one hand and a pan of cornbread in the other.
She looked me up and down and started to laugh.
"Well, look at you," Verna said. "Mrs. Tankersley."
"Word travels."
"Honey, it was on the dock until the pig was gone. Two hundred witnesses and a man with a pair of tongs."
She set the pie on the porch rail and hugged me hard.
Verna was fifty-four, broad and brisk, with a gray bob and reading glasses pushed up on her head.
She smelled of coffee and Jergens lotion.
"I came to say I'm sorry, and to say I'm not," she said.
