Chapter 16: Control
Jo's POV
I sat on the long table in the schoolhouse with my bare feet on the bench.
The woodstove roared behind me, and I called the roll.
"Four-One," I said.
"Here," said Gilles.
"Answer it right," I said.
"Control," he said, low, and I felt it all the way down my spine.
It was Wednesday night, and nobody had talked about the Racicot barn or the porch light since Monday.
We had talked enough.
There were five men in a line in front of the table, with their boots off and their shirts on the floor.
They had come in one at a time from the cold, and not one of them had asked what I wanted.
They had just waited to be told.
"Engine 4," I said.
"Control," Normand said.
His chest was heaving, and his cock stood out thick from the red-brown hair, already dark with blood.
"Tanker 4."
"Control," said Ansel, dry, and his eyes did not leave my face.
"Medic 4."
"Control," Emile said softly.
"Engine 4 rider."
"Control," Tibo said.
His voice cracked on the second syllable, and I smiled.
"I've heard every one of you say my name at three in the morning," I said.
"You said it to a microphone.
"Say it to me."
"Midnight," Gilles said.
He said it the way he had said "Merry Christmas," low and rough and right against my ear from six feet away.
The others said it after him, one at a time, and I felt each name settle on my skin.
"Ansel," I said.
"Get on the table.
"On your back."
He did it at once.
The long oak boards took his weight without a creak.
He lay with his hands at his sides and his sandy hair against the wood.
He looked up at me with his long dry face gone slack.
I knelt over his hips and took him in my hand.
He was long and hot and curved, and he jumped when I touched him.
"Hold," I said.
"Holding," Ansel said.
I sank onto him slowly, and the stretch rolled through me, deep and exact.
