Chapter 13: Sworn Against Him

I read the complaint standing in the doorway, in his shirt, with the shower still running behind me.

It was a dozen pages, and Desmond had signed every one.

The first page said that Alec Kittridge, a name partner of Kittridge & Marr, had padded the bills of a client called Brandt Industries.

The second page gave the number, 212 entries over six years.

The third page said the money had gone through the Kittridge household account into LT Holdings, a private account in the name of his wife.

I read that line three times.

Desmond had not lied about the money.

He had told the truth about every dollar, and he had turned it around so that Alec was the thief.

The water shut off.

Alec came out of the bathroom with a towel around his hips and his hair dripping, and he stopped when he saw my face.

"What is it?"

I held out the first page.

He read it standing there.

I watched his jaw work, and then I watched him get very still.

"He filed it himself," Alec said.

"As the complainant, because he's the senior partner and has a duty to report." I turned to the last page. "He asks the committee to suspend your license until a hearing. That's three weeks from Friday."

"Suspend it."

"On the grounds that you're a danger to your clients."

He sat down on the arm of the sofa bed.

"I'm a danger to my clients," he said, and laughed, one short breath through his nose.
