Chapter 11: The Stone
The healer set the cloth on my kitchen table and unfolded it one corner at a time.
Inside lay a stone the size of a thumbnail, flat and dull, with a hairline crack through the middle.
It was the pale stone from Dahlia's collar.
Nolan stood up so fast his stool fell over.
Elias had come in from the gate with rain on his shoulders and stopped dead in the doorway.
"Don't touch it," the healer said. "Look."
"It's a pebble," I said.
"It's moonstone. Look at the edge."
I bent closer.
One edge was clean and sharp, where it had been broken from something bigger.
The healer took a small gold knife out of his coat and laid it on the table beside the stone.
"When I was eighteen, I was bound at the Moon Temple altar," he said. "The priestess made me put my hand on the white stone corner of it. It was the only chipped corner on the whole altar. I asked why."
"What did she say?"
"That it had always been chipped. I believed her."
"You think this is the chip."
"I know it is," the healer said. "I held it for an hour tonight. I felt five threads in it. Five bonds, and a sixth running out."
My heart was beating slowly and heavily.
"Whose threads?" I said.
"Ours," Elias said from the doorway.
His face had gone white.
"Ours," said Nolan. "I felt it too. When the healer put it down, I felt something pull in my chest, here."
He pressed his hand to his breastbone.
"Don't," I said sharply. "Don't give me any more of that. Say it plain."
