Chapter 20: Last Call

Rohan held the envelope out as I came down the steps.

"I sold the car," he said.

Colin looked over at us from the curb, and Rohan didn't turn his head.

"It was the car you paid eleven months on. I sold it Saturday. It was worth fourteen thousand two hundred, and it's all in there."

I took the envelope and didn't open it.

"Why Saturday?"

"Because Saturday I stopped being a person who could say 'I'll pay you back' and mean the first of next month."

He took a folded printout from his pocket.

"Evan called me at six this morning."

"What did he want?"

"A statement. That you told us all along the money was a gift. That you never asked for any of it back." He swallowed. "His lawyer drew it up. I just had to sign."

"And?"

"I told him you kept a list."

He handed me the printout.

It was a screenshot of the text thread, with Evan's request and Rohan's reply under it.

Rohan had written: "I won't sign that. She paid for my car and my loans. I owe her thirty-eight thousand dollars."

"I also sent the whole chat export to Mr. MacGovern's HR," Rohan said. "All eight months of The Four, with the dates. You don't have to forgive me. I just want it on record that I was in it, and what I wrote."

"That's going to cost you at the hospital."

"It might."

"Rohan."

"I know." He wiped his face and then stopped himself, because I had told him once I didn't want to see him cry.
