Adam's POV

I had been parked outside her building for forty minutes when I sent the text.

Her porch light was off.

A stack of cardboard boxes sat by the door with a man's winter coat folded on top.

I had told my driver to go home.

I wanted to be a man standing in her driveway with nothing in his hands but the truth.

On the seat beside me was a folder my chief of staff had couriered to the Charlotte office that afternoon.

I had read it twice.

Evan Lacey, sales director, nine years with Halden Hospitality.

Three promotions.

Two formal complaints from junior women on his team, both closed as "resolved without action."

One expense report from Orlando that listed the four Express Passes as a "client development perk."

Those passes belonged to the resort's guests.

They were not meant for staff, and they were certainly not meant for a man's friends.

He had walked into my VIP desk with his employee badge and asked for them by code, and a tired concierge had handed them over.

I had learned all that in ten minutes on Thursday morning.

I had known his name before I ever knew hers.

When the night manager phoned me on Wednesday evening about a guest named Carrow who had frozen a card, I had pulled the reservation.

The room block was in her name.

The "party of four" in the steakhouse was an employee of mine.

I had gone down to the lobby to look at the woman who paid for all of it.
