Chapter 22: All in Favor

I saw my father run past me up the aisle, and I saw Ronan not move.

Colm got there first.

He came off the stage in two jumps with his phone in his hand and put his body between them.

"Dad, stop."

"Get out of my way."

"No," Colm said.

It was the first time anyone had heard him say it.

My father stopped, breathing hard, with his hands still up.

Two of the ushers closed in behind him and took his arms.

They did it politely.

"Let go of me. I own this event."

"Sir," one of them said. "Please come back to the stage."

I walked down the aisle and up the steps and took the microphone out of the stand.

Nobody stopped me.

The big wall behind me still showed the coat.

Corrine stood at the edge of the wide shot, looking at her watch.

Twelve hundred faces were turned toward me.

My knees were not steady, and I did not care.

"My name is Nessa Pfeiffer," I said. "I'm twenty-six. I work at a drugstore in Scranton, and I make nineteen dollars and forty cents an hour."

Somebody in the dark laughed, and then stopped.

"For five years, my whole paycheck went into this family's fund. That's thirteen hundred and twelve dollars every other Friday. Every time I asked for a dollar of it back, my father called a vote."

I turned to the wall.

"Ronan, the sheet."

The picture changed.
